Coach Turned 85 and Threw the Only Party at Fashion Week That FeltLike One

Coach marked its 85th anniversary with its Spring/Summer 2027 show on September 9, 2026, at Basketball City in downtown Manhattan, opening New York Fashion Week’s September 2026 (SS27) season alongside Ralph Lauren a day ahead of the official calendar. The house was founded in 1941; creative director Stuart Vevers has run it since 2013.

Anniversary shows are usually where brands go to be boring — a retrospective, a greatest-hits reel, a gala in runway form. Coach did the opposite, and Vevers said why at a preview at the brand’s Hudson Yards headquarters: “I felt the best way to honor 85 years was actually to look forward.”

A birthday party with a thesis

The show opened with curtains rising on student string musicians from UpBeat NYC playing “Love Is the Message.” It closed with models taking the final walk alongside voguing dancers while Violet Chachki ascended out of a giant cake to perform “Happy Birthday.” In between: an actual fashion argument.

The staging choices were not decoration; they were a reading list. A Philly-soul anthem beloved of the loft-party era, ballroom’s voguing lineage, a drag star in a cake — every reference pointed at New York nightlife as the house’s real archive, which for an 85-year-old leather-goods company is a far more interesting claim than “we invented the Tabby.”

Loveworn and luxe

The collection ran on a tension Vevers has been refining for a decade — loveworn and luxe. Slim, straight silhouettes and refined tailoring on one track; inside-out construction, expressive leatherwork and visibly lived-in materials on the other. The party layer sat on top: trompe l’oeil sequins and glitter overprinted on pastel tops, lamé dresses that read birthday without reading costume.

What makes the Coach project genuinely unusual among American heritage brands is who it is for. Vevers has spent recent years deliberately pulling the house toward younger buyers with repaired, re-crafted, deliberately imperfect leather goods, and that worldview was all over this runway. The 85-year-old house in the room was the least nostalgic brand on the New York calendar.

Why this could only happen in New York

The point matters beyond Coach. New York’s fashion week is routinely pronounced dead by people comparing it to Paris. But Paris does not produce this — a mass-accessible American leather house, under a British designer, staging a ballroom-coded birthday party with a drag star in a cake, and backing it with real product. It is a New York show in the oldest sense: commerce and subculture in the same room, both having a good time.
