Ralph Lauren Opened New York Fashion Week Before ItEven Started
At Jack Shainman Gallery, a sixty-year-old necktie came back as a corset — and the oldest name on the American calendar looked like the youngest.

Ralph Lauren showed his Spring 2027 collection on September 9, 2026, at the Jack Shainman Gallery in Manhattan — one day before the official CFDA calendar opened New York Fashion Week for the Spring/Summer 2027 (SS27) season. He does not technically open the week. He shows a day before it begins, which is a quiet way of saying the week does not start until he says it does.

A gallery, no set, total confidence
For the third season running, Lauren took over Jack Shainman’s converted school building downtown — a space with the kind of architecture and light most set designers spend six figures trying to fake. No set. No theater. Just clothes in a room, which at this point in fashion’s arms race of spectacle reads as the most confident move available.
The collection was billed as “a new kind of romance — cool and sophisticated,” and the phrase actually held up on the runway. The opening look set the terms: a fine cotton jacquard shirt reworked as a tie-back corset over low-slung white trousers with side buttons running midcalf to hem. Historical silhouette, modern cut, no costume.
A month on — with the whole SS27 season now on the books — it is the opening look people still describe from memory. Spectacle fades faster than a good shirt.
The necktie, sixty years later
The sharpest moment was a piece of self-quotation. A vibrant blue floral brocade blouse with exaggerated pouf sleeves arrived with a matching micro vest and an ultra-wide necktie — a direct reference to the wide tie that launched Lauren’s career in 1967 — styled against light-wash distressed denim. Most heritage brands treat their archive like glass. Lauren wore his with jeans.
Nearly six decades into the company’s life — and at 86, with Lauren himself still running the creative show — the brand is doing what almost no American megabrand manages: making the archive feel like a provocation instead of a museum. Sexiness through historical reference is a hard trick; done badly it is a costume party. This was not done badly.
Menswear, resized
The tailoring made the same argument from the other direction: true men’s suits, cut for a woman’s body, produced in an Italian men’s factory. Not “menswear-inspired.” The actual construction, resized. It is the kind of detail that separates a design decision from a styling one, and it is why the front row — Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Elizabeth Debicki, Rachel Brosnahan, Ariana DeBose, Eiza González — looked less like celebrity seeding and more like a client list.
