Lacoste
Founded in 1933 by tennis champion René Lacoste, inventor of the modern polo shirt, Lacoste built sport-rooted French style around its crocodile emblem. Creative director Pelagia Kolotouros — whose résumé spans Adidas, Yeezy, The North Face, and Calvin Klein — has led the brand’s runway collections since 2023, sharpening the tension between tennis heritage and streetwear.
Profile
LacosteThe crocodile predates the company: it was Lacoste’s nickname on the tennis circuit, earned — as the story goes — over a wager involving a crocodile-skin suitcase, and embroidered onto his blazers before it ever appeared on a shirt. The L.12.12 piqué polo he designed for his own comfort on court replaced the starched long-sleeved shirts of the era and became one of the most copied garments of the twentieth century — sportswear’s founding document.
After decades as a wardrobe staple worn everywhere from country clubs to hip-hop videos, the brand returned seriously to the runway in the 2020s. Kolotouros stages her collections as dialogues between the archive and the street — tennis whites blown up to streetwear proportions, croc logos reworked at every scale — repositioning a ninety-year-old sports label as a fashion-week fixture.
