Maxhosa Africa
Founded in 2012 by Laduma Ngxokolo from a university thesis project, MaXhosa Africa is a South African luxury knitwear house whose signature translates traditional Xhosa beadwork patterns, symbols, and colourways into contemporary graphic knits. After five seasons of Paris presentations, the house stages its first official FHCM runway show this season — a first for South African fashion — with Ngxokolo as founder and chief creative director.
Profile
Maxhosa AfricaThe label began with a specific brief: Ngxokolo’s thesis sought modern knitwear for amakrwala — young Xhosa men dressing formally after initiation — and the answer he found was to build it from his own culture’s visual language rather than borrowed European codes. That founding logic still governs the house: every geometric motif traces back to Xhosa beadwork, and the brand treats each collection as an act of cultural preservation as much as design.
From Port Elizabeth beginnings, MaXhosa has grown into one of the African continent’s most recognized luxury names, with flagship retail in Johannesburg, international stockists, and museum recognition abroad — and its promotion from presentation to full runway slot on the official Paris calendar marks a milestone not just for the house but for South African fashion’s standing on the global schedule.
