Louis Vuitton
Founded in Paris in 1854 by trunk-maker Louis Vuitton, the house grew from travel goods into the world’s most valuable luxury brand and the flagship of LVMH. Nicolas Ghesquière has been artistic director of women’s collections since 2013, and his time-traveling, tech-inflected shows traditionally close Paris Fashion Week.
Profile
Louis VuittonVuitton’s flat-topped, stackable trunks reinvented luggage for the railway age, and the Monogram canvas — designed in 1896 by his son Georges to foil counterfeiters — became the most recognized pattern in luxury. Fashion arrived comparatively late: Marc Jacobs launched the first ready-to-wear in 1997 and spent sixteen years splicing the house’s travel codes with art-world collaborations, from Murakami’s rainbow monograms onward.
Ghesquière’s womenswear treats time as raw material — space-age silhouettes cut against historical costume, staged in monumental settings from the Louvre to modernist landmarks — and his show’s closing slot has become Paris Fashion Week’s institutional finale. The house that packed the nineteenth century’s luggage now sets the tempo for fashion’s biggest stage.
