Stella McCartney

Stella McCartney founded her namesake label in London in 2001 on a strict no-leather, no-fur charter that predated the industry’s sustainability turn by two decades, pairing sharp Savile Row–informed tailoring with material innovation. McCartney remains founder and creative director; in 2026 she became the first industry ambassador for Central Saint Martins’ M School.

Profile

Stella McCartney

McCartney trained on Savile Row and at Central Saint Martins — her 1995 graduate show, walked by Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss, made headlines before she had a label — then ran Chloé from 1997, reviving the house before launching her own name with Kering. She later bought back her independence, and has since partnered with LVMH while keeping creative control.

The charter has never bent: no leather, no fur, no feathers, no exotic skins, backed by early bets on mushroom-based leathers, regenerated nylon, and forest-safe viscose that pushed suppliers industry-wide. The clothes themselves argue the point — sharp tailoring, lingerie-touched slip dresses, an athletic ease refined through her long adidas partnership — insisting that principle and desirability were never in conflict.
