Celine
Founded by Céline Vipiana in Paris in 1945 and part of LVMH, Celine is defined by understated bourgeois French elegance — a code shaped in the modern era by Phoebe Philo’s minimalism and Hedi Slimane’s rock-cut tailoring. American designer Michael Rider, a Philo-era Celine alum who later led Ralph Lauren’s Polo line, was named creative director in 2025 and debuted with a co-ed collection.
Profile
CelineThe house began humbly — Vipiana’s made-to-measure children’s shoes — before growing into a byword for polished Parisian ready-to-wear and leather goods. Philo’s 2008–2018 tenure made it a generational cult: architectural minimalism, intelligent bags, a wardrobe for women that fashion still calls “Old Céline” with open longing. Slimane followed with skinny-cut rock tailoring, a menswear launch, and a blockbuster commercial run.
Rider’s appointment folds the two eras together — he worked in Philo’s Celine studio before a decade defining American polish at Polo Ralph Lauren — and his co-ed debut leaned into exactly that synthesis: bourgeois ease, sharpened. For LVMH, Celine remains a quiet giant; for Paris, one of the calendar’s bellwethers of taste.
