Saab is largely self-taught — he opened his Beirut atelier at eighteen — and built his empire on a single perfected register: the embellished gown, thousands of hours of beadwork resolving into liquid light. Queen Rania of Jordan wore him for her 1999 enthronement; Halle Berry’s embroidered burgundy Saab at the 2002 Academy Awards, worn while making Oscar history, remains one of the red carpet’s defining dresses.
