Yohji Yamamoto

His 1981 Paris debut — black, draped, deliberately unfinished — landed as a scandal and became a revolution: within a decade, the Japanese avant-garde’s loose, shadowed silhouette had permanently widened what Western fashion considered beautiful. Yamamoto’s black is a philosophy — “modest and arrogant at the same time,” in his words — cut with a master tailor’s hand.

With Y-3, his 2003 partnership with adidas, he effectively invented the luxury-sportswear collaboration a decade before the industry made it standard practice. Now in his sixth decade of work, Yamamoto remains fashion’s poet-craftsman: still draping, still showing in Paris, still proving each season that a garment can hold both rigor and melancholy.
