Cristóbal Balenciaga was the couturier other couturiers studied — Dior called him “the master of us all” — a Spaniard who could cut, sew, and fit an entire garment himself, and whose semi-fitted line, sack dress, and sculpted volumes invented shapes fashion still lives inside. He closed the house himself in 1968, refusing to bend to ready-to-wear; it lay dormant for decades before its modern revival.

The contemporary era ran from Nicolas Ghesquière’s cult futurism through Demna’s decade of viral provocation — the platform Crocs, the destroyed sneakers, the shows staged in mud and snow — which ended with his 2025 departure for Gucci. Piccioli, celebrated at Valentino for chromatic, humanist couture, has turned the house back toward its founder: volume, precision, and reverence for the cut.
